Department of Medical Biology and Genetics has an inter-faculty status and in its activities is guided by the Law of the Russian Federation on Education and normative documents MO, Rectorate and the Academic Council of the University (for example, Standards of educational and methodological activities of the Medical Institute, 2002).

The purpose of organizing the educational process is the effective implementation of the three principles of teaching medical students.

• Acquisition of knowledge on fundamental questions of biology. In implementing this principle, we adhere to the statement of I. V. Davydovsky “Medicine, taken in terms of theory, is first of all general biology.”
• Acquisition of practical skills and abilities.
• Education of the ability to think independently is based on the implementation of such a methodical approach to the study of any biological phenomenon or process, which is built according to the following principle: norm - possible violations - consequences of violations - possible correction. This scheme allows students to form the basics of clinical thinking, encourages students to work independently, to search for information and the ability to use it.

The organization of the educational process at the Department of Biology is carried out in accordance with the requirements of the State Educational Standard of Specialties, on the basis of which, together with the educational and methodological department and taking into account the standard curricula (TUP), annual working curricula (ARC) have been developed.

At the department, currently, the staff of the department created and implemented in daily activities 8 RUP for the following specialties:

• Specialty 040100 - medical business (discipline - biology with the basics of ecology).
• Specialty 040200 - pediatrics (discipline - biology with the basics of ecology).
• Specialty 040300 - medical and preventive work (discipline - biology with the basics of ecology).
• Specialty 040400 - dentistry (discipline - biology with genetics and basics of ecology).
• Specialty 04050 - pharmacy.

The accepted form of laboratory work is frontal, when all students simultaneously perform the same work. Individualization is achieved by working with different objects. In some classes, work is carried out with one object, but under different conditions, which also allows you to diversify the experiment and teaches students to be independent.

One of the technologies that has been introduced and is being actively improved at our department is a modular learning technology. At its core, the modular system for organizing the educational process is currently the most effective methodological system of education.

In order to systematically monitor the effectiveness of student learning, several types of control are used. The control is based on the principle of constant, duplicate control, when a topic mastered at a certain level is controlled several times.

• Current control - verification by an express test-survey of students' readiness for one laboratory lesson.
• Modular control - assessment of students' knowledge of three or four lessons that make up the training module.
• The test is an assessment of the assimilation by students of laboratory classes of 19 lessons in the 1st and 16 lessons in the 2nd semester.
• Exam - assessment of the success of mastering all the material work program in biology during training at the department.

History of the Department of Medical Biology and Genetics

In 1931, the Medical Faculty of Kazan University was transformed into the Medical Institute. In the same year, the department of biology was created at the opened institute.

Mitochondria have long been known for their independence: it is believed that they can multiply and fight each other without "advising" with the rest of the cell. A new study has found a limit to the independence of mitochondria: it turned out that most of the mutations that occur in their DNA are not inherited. The descendants get only "permitted" mutations, which somehow managed to "coordinate" with the nuclear genome.

In search of an explanation for this phenomenon, a large group of British scientists studied in detail the inheritance of mitochondrial DNA in more than 1500 mother-child pairs.

Each human cell carries hundreds or even thousands of mitochondria. If they all contain the same DNA sequence, this is called homoplasmy, but if it can be found in the cell different variants mitochondrial DNA, speak of heteroplasmy. Among one and a half thousand mothers and their children, 45% of scientists found heteroplasmy, that is, in the cytoplasm of their cells, at least 1% of the mitochondria contained sequence variants that differed from the rest of the mitochondria in the cell. All these variants can be divided into three groups: inherited (the same for mother and child), lost in the generation (only the mother has) or newly formed (appear only in the child). It turned out that the first - inherited - were significantly more (almost 20%) than the lost or new ones (about 6%).

The researchers then compared their list of sequence variants with the largest mitochondrial DNA databases. It turned out that the participants in the experiment have new, previously unknown options that have not yet been included in these databases. However, their chance of being inherited by a child turned out to be almost five times lower than that of known variants. It turns out that, for some reason, mothers "prefer" to pass on more common variants to their offspring. However, here the logic is most likely strictly the opposite: some variants get the greatest advantage over others and therefore survive better in the egg and pass on to the child.

Nevertheless, we now have the first evidence that not only the most viable, but also the most "corresponding" mitochondria receive an advantage. And this may be the answer to the question why, after a nuclear transplant into a new egg, healthy mitochondria often become mutants. Perhaps it is the nuclear genes that provoke their uneven survival.

Centrosome - called the microtubule organizing center (COM), is localized in the center of the cell near the nucleus. Microtubules - dynamic structures - are able to grow, shorten, and they also have a high rate of assembly and disassembly (for example, the mitotic spindle).

Functions of microtubules: participation in the act of movement itself, since they are structural elements (this is intracellular transport, for example: the movement of synaptic vesicles); participation in cell division; the formation of a system of fibers along which vesicles and organelles move (the movement of substances from the Golgi complex to the EPS).

Connection of microtubules with the clinic Drug therapy of cancer patients consists in the destruction of the mitotic spindle by substances that disrupt polymerization (colchicine, vinblastine). These drugs bind to microtubules and inhibit the formation of the mitotic spindle,

Microfilaments (actin filaments) Consist of actin protein. Actin is found in many eukaryotic cells, accounting for up to 5% of total protein cells. Most cells contain a dense network of actin filaments. These are thin protein filaments with a diameter of -5-7 nm, form a cellular cortex, which gives mechanical strength to the cell surface, allows it to change its shape.

Intermediate filaments are found in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells. These are rigid, strong protein fibers, polypeptides resistant to stretching, form a characteristic "basket" near the nucleus, from there they move along curved trajectories along the periphery. The thickness is 810 nm, i.e., intermediate between the diameter of microtubules and actin filaments.

The functions of intermediate filaments are to resist mechanical pressure in epithelial cells, they are involved in the formation of the nuclear lamina. That is, in addition to mechanical, protective, the formation of a transcellular network to counteract external loads.

Intermediate filaments form several proteins: Keratins - only in epithelial cells there are 20 different keratins, 8 heavy keratins - specific for hair and nails; Vimentin and related proteins - common in fibroblasts and endothelial cells;

Intermediate filaments provide resistance to mechanical stress, but some mutations in keratin genes change the organization of keratin filaments, which are found in the basal layer of the epithelium. Such genetic changes increase the sensitivity of the skin to mechanical damage. An example is

ordinary and bullous pemphigus - bubbles appear on the skin (especially on the palms, soles, around the mouth, torso, neck, scars form, detachment of nails).

Neurofilaments - the cytoskeleton in nerve cells is formed from 3 types of proteins: low molecular weight proteins (NF-Z) with low molecular weight; medium neurofilament proteins (NFM) with an average molecular weight; high molecular weight neurofilament proteins (NF-H) with high molecular weight.

Neurofilaments are located along the neuron, give elasticity to the long processes of neurons (Fig. 7-2, st 148, ch. 7). membrane on which they are located.

The nuclear lamina - or fibrous lamina - is a network of intermediate filaments located on the inner surface of the nuclear membrane and associated with nuclear pores. Unlike other intermediate filaments, lamins are destroyed during mitosis during nuclear and nuclear membrane fragmentation and are restored at the end of mitosis.
