Prospects for the development of MMF NSU (2001-2005).

  • The basis for the development of the NSU MMF from its foundation was the basic principles that determined the successful development of the faculty and its survival in the difficult last decades and the preservation of leadership among the mathematical faculties of the world in terms of the quality of student training.

  • These are the following principles:

  • The basis of the teaching staff of the faculty is made up of part-time teachers, leading researchers of the academic institutes of the SB RAS. This provides students with a deep understanding of the main results and research methods in various areas of mathematics, mechanics and computer science.

  • In the first 2.5 years, fundamental mathematical training is given in all three main areas of training students at the MMF, and then specialization begins at the departments based in the leading academic institutions of the SB RAS:

  • IM, IG, IVMVMG, IVT, ISI, ITPM. Students and bachelors and masters work in research teams, participate in research seminars, schools and conferences of basic institutions, conduct independent research work. The institutes provide students with access to the library and the necessary equipment for research work.

  • In the magistracy, author's courses are read, delivered by the leaders of the leading scientific schools represented at the faculty.

  • The best graduates fill up the leading scientific schools after graduation and are involved in work at the faculty.

  • Research projects of students are connected both with fundamental research in the field of mathematics, mechanics and computer science, as well as with the implementation of applied research both on problems studied in other research institutes of the SB RAS, and in the interests of production and national security.

Perspective work plan of MMF NSU, 2001-2005.

  • One of the most important areas of work of the faculty is the training of scientific personnel for research institutes of the SB RAS. The need to infuse new young forces into our leading scientific schools, as well as specialists in applied mathematics, mathematical modeling and computer science for various institutes of the SB RAS.

  • Development of closer ties with the institutes of the SB RAS for the training of MMF graduates for them, specializing in their subjects. Creation of an organizational base for such interactions, creation of a department of mathematical methods in natural sciences based on cooperation with the Joint Institute of Geology and the Institute of Cytology and Genetics. Expanding the base of such cooperation, restoring old scientific ties.

  • Training of teaching staff, assistance in the development of teaching and research in the field of mathematics, mechanics and computer science and cooperation with universities in Novosibirsk and the Siberian Federal District.

  • Development of cooperation with manufacturing companies in training specialists in the field of mathematical and computer modeling, development, design and maintenance of large software systems

  • Reformation of curricula and course programs based on the latest achievements of science and prospects for its development, creation of original courses. Preparation of teaching aids, problem books and textbooks for basic mathematical courses.

  • Further development of educational and scientific centers based in academic institutions. Debugging of mechanisms of interaction faculty-institute. Formation on the basis of ITAM staff of the base department at ITAM SB RAS.

  • The opening of a specialization in the history of mathematics, and especially in Siberia, in the study of the scientific heritage of our world famous scientists.

  • Organization and holding in 2003 of the NSU MMF Alumni Mathematical Congress to discuss both the general problems of science and mathematics education, and the prospects for the development of the faculty and employment of MMF graduates.

  • Creation of student design bureaus for various applied research on the basis of research institutes and firms cooperating with the faculty.

  • Expansion of the topics of scientific conferences and schools held with the participation of the faculty and departments with the participation of students and graduate students.

  • Work with MMF alumni through the MMF support fund, creation of a sponsorship system and commemorative "symbols" for the oldest teachers of the faculty and sponsors.

  • Formation of the library fund of the faculty and cooperation with the libraries of the institutes to replenish their funds.

  • Analysis of the personnel potential of the institutes of the SB RAS and the prospects for securing MMF graduates for work at the institutes of the SB RAS and at the MMF.

  • Preparation of a collection on the history of the MMF NSU and its founders, leading scientists who have made a significant contribution to the formation of the faculty.

  • Expanding the circle of authors of the Bulletin of the NSU, attracting articles from the world's leading scientists to the journal.

  • International scientific cooperation with the world's leading universities where our graduates work. Internship of our students and graduate students in the leading scientific centers of the world.

  • Creation of a faculty scientific and methodological seminar

  • "Mathematics in the XXI century" to discuss the latest results of paramount importance, current problems, the role of mathematics in modern society, the results of the development of mathematics in the last century and its prospects in the new, the problems of mathematical education in universities and at school (especially in connection with the 12-year education).

  • Promotion of the achievements of mathematics, mechanics and computer science among the population of Novosibirsk and the Siberian Federal District, as well as famous scientists, leaders of world-famous scientific schools and their achievements. Holding a competition for the best popular scientific article about mathematics.

Priority problems requiring systematic work 2001-2005:

  • Maintaining the status of NSU as an academic university.

  • Increasing pay for teachers.

  • Solving the issue of adequate representation of the MMF staff in the NSU conference and the NSU Academic Council.

  • Opening of nominal audiences to them. S.L. Soboleva and I.N. Vekua.

  • Preserving the scientific potential of the departments by replenishing with young graduates, there is already a problem with a lack of highly qualified teachers.

  • Solving the problem of consistency of courses read by streams.

  • Problems of providing high-quality scientific guidance in some departments, the infrastructure of specialization in the field of telecommunications has been destroyed.

  • Lack of premises for conducting faculty work (the last room was taken away, where work was carried out on the preparation of the journal, the All-Russian competition, scientific conferences, student events and work with sponsors).

  • Insufficient propaganda of mathematical knowledge among school graduates of the city. It is necessary to restore the participation of our students, graduate students and teachers in the holding of regional Olympiads. Make greater use of the media to inform about the MFF and admission to the MFF.

    Faculty History

In 2018, Mekhmat celebrated its 60th anniversary, although the training of mathematicians in Belarus began in 1923 with the opening of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics at the Belarusian State University. In October 1958, the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics was divided into two: Physics and Mathematics. In May 1970, on the basis of three departments of the Faculty of Mathematics, the Faculty of Applied Mathematics was separated. In 1975, the Faculty of Mathematics, in connection with the introduction of the Department of Mechanics, was renamed into the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics.

Now the faculty includes 10 departments and 3 educational laboratories, which employ 32 professors and doctors of science, 65 associate professors and candidates of science. More than 950 full-time students study at the faculty, about 300 students in absentia, 69 undergraduates, over 40 graduate students and 3 doctoral students.

The faculty is proud of them
