Nowadays, many parents believe that a child, even before entering first grade, must learn not only to write and count, but also to know the basic techniques of algebra: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. That is why mothers and fathers face a serious question: “how to teach a child to learn the multiplication table”?

Basic rules for optimal results

Of course, you can teach a child using basic methods (they are described below). However, parents who are tuned in to how easy it is to learn the multiplication table for a child should not only learn special tricks (with which you can teach your child the multiplication table much easier and faster), but also choose the most optimal method for your baby.

Regardless of which method you choose, you must carefully observe the following rules:

  1. To make learning easy for a child, frequent breaks are necessary;
  2. An objective assessment of the baby's abilities is necessary: a preschooler simply cannot physically learn the entire multiplication table in three hours;
  3. Be sure to praise your child for every success, no matter how small;
  4. It is strictly forbidden to scold a child if he cannot learn something. It is best in this case to take a short break, and then return to the stumbling block again;
  5. Try to turn the study of the multiplication table into a game: if the child is interested and fun, then all knowledge will be absorbed much faster than if parents force the fidget to sit at boring books.

The basic way to learn the multiplication table

A parent who seriously thinks about how to learn the multiplication table with a child can, in a fit of inspiration, recall his own childhood: counting sticks, a blackboard, a strict teacher and a huge table completely filled with numbers. It is this table that is most often used in schools, so it is recommended to conduct at least the first lesson with it.

To begin with, you should print (or draw) two versions of the tables: the first is completely filled, and the second is only with numbers around the edges. It is desirable that the second table be large, since the child will enter the numbers on his own.

At the first lesson, try to explain to the child the basic meaning of multiplication: this is the same addition, only multiple. Take small numbers as an example to show how multiplication works. An example might look like this:

“Here are the numbers two and three. In order to multiply three by two, we need to add three and three. How much will it take? That's right, six!"

What should be done after the first “trial” lesson with the table?

If everything went well, try working with the table again: explain to your child the peculiar “mirroring” of multiplication:
“Now let's see how much is two times three. In order to calculate this, we need to add a two to the deuce, and then add the deuce again. Let's write them down in a column. How much will it take? Clever, six! You see, three times two is six, and two times three is six. So you learned the first rule of multiplication: by changing the factors (these are the numbers that you multiplied), the product (this is the number that you received in the answer) will not change!”
Be sure to praise your child.
“See how fast you counted! Learning the multiplication table is easier than it seems at first glance!”

Be patient.

If a child cannot quickly perform an addition operation, there is no need to prompt him: he will definitely count himself, he just needs more time than an adult.

If it took a little time to explain this rule, then you can start filling in the part of the multiplication table with the number 1 (usually children quickly understand the meaning of multiplying by 1). As soon as the baby's attention begins to dissipate, the lesson should be stopped - the preschooler will not learn more material.

When you click you will have a large printable table

Subsequent classes

Make a large number of cards with examples from the multiplication table. Before each lesson, be sure to let the baby solve familiar examples, otherwise the knowledge will simply be forgotten.
Small tricks will help you remember the results easier
After the kid learns multiplication involving one, you can try multiplying a number by a ten, or a dozen by a number. Teaching a child to assign an extra zero to each number will be much easier than, say, teaching him to multiply numbers by six.

Multiplication by two, three and four. Usually these actions are not difficult, since they can be easily counted on the fingers.

How to teach a child to multiply by five? It's very simple: any even number will end with 0, and odd - with 5. Counting them is a matter of technology.

Here is practically learned the entire multiplication table. But how to learn easily and quickly multiplication by the most complex numbers: six, seven and eight?

Most likely, they will simply have to be memorized: even adults often get confused in multiplying these numbers.

Is there an alternative to a table?

If during the first lessons you see that it is clearly difficult for a child to remember even the simplest examples, in no case do not swear at him, but start trying alternative methods.

The method of studying the multiplication table with the help of verses seems interesting: now there are whole books that make it possible not only to easily pull up “falling” numbers, but also to learn the multiplication table from scratch. Fairy tales about numbers are also interesting: they can jokingly tell about one of the most difficult operations of mathematics to understand: multiplication.

However, studying with the help of poems or fairy tales alone can be endlessly long without the use of such an additional technique as example cards. Remember that the child's brain needs relentless repetition - only then will the information be not only mechanically learned, but also conscious. And this is a guarantee that the baby will not forget the multiplication table until old age.

How to understand in advance whether it is easier to learn the multiplication table by a simple table or by adding poetic games with a child? Remember the character of the kid: if he is a pronounced humanist, then the games will definitely appeal to him, thereby making the learning process more exciting.

Toys always help

If you have absolutely no idea how you can quickly help your child learn this complex multiplication table, then use a win-win option: your baby's favorite toys.

The only criterion for toys is that any outsider should easily understand that they illustrate precisely multiplication. For example, when multiplying three wheels from a car by two, you should get exactly six wheels, and not four wheels, a bumper and a headlight (in this case, it will be extremely difficult to teach a child!). Also, if you have chosen learning with toys, then you should not try to teach your child to count on his fingers instead - these are two completely different methods!

One of the most interesting ideas was the idea of one father to put into action a huge amount of LEGO parts, which were scattered in huge quantities throughout the apartment. Taking the smallest detail as a unit, the father began to show his son the basics of multiplying by two, by three and by four (after all, there were a lot of LEGOs, so they did not experience a shortage of pieces). As a result, all classes were held in the form of a game, and the father could not even think that it would be so easy and fast to teach his son to multiply!

Many parents have helped to use interactive sound posters in teaching. In this case, memorization is better than in the process of a regular lesson or cramming by heart.

Fingers and multiplication

Oddly enough, but you can quickly learn the multiplication table even on your own fingers!

Many parents disapprove of the habit of children to check all the results of calculations on the fingers, arguing that it is easy to count only small numbers on the fingers.

In fact, this is not entirely true: you can easily learn the multiplication table (and quite quickly!), Using only your own fingers and knowledge of interesting mathematical patterns (however, this will not save the kid from solving examples to repeat the material).

Multiplying by NINE with your fingers - the result is instant

Of course, with the simplest examples, everything is clear: ten fingers are enough for the calculation. But what about multiplying by nine?

In fact, you can: for example, multiplying by nine is insanely fast: in just one step. It is necessary to count (starting from the left thumb) up to the number that we multiply by nine (or by which we multiply nine). Numbers to the left of it will give tens, and numbers to the right will give ones. This is truly a fantastic way. Much easier to multiply by nine.

Of course, it is extremely difficult to learn a table in this way without repetition, therefore, when choosing this approach, a large number of practical tasks are required.

Change is needed

Regardless of the age of the baby, he needs a large number of breaks (preferably every 10-15 minutes), otherwise it will not be easy to learn the basic laws of multiplication: after 10 minutes of continuous training, the child will continually be distracted by a cat, a ray of the Sun looking out the window, ringing in the street and so on.

How to maximize the level of effectiveness of classes? First, it is worth drawing a table with a clear lesson plan (it should contain small breaks) and follow it all the time.

Secondly, it is necessary to show imagination: you can also learn the material in a playful way. For example, you can create your own card game.

Game example: cards are created (their number may vary, repetitions and bonus cards are possible). The main thing is that the child knows all the examples on the cards involved in the game. The basic rule of the game is that the player, without looking, draws a card and solves an example in a certain time. The one who scores the most points wins. Bonus cards can add an amount of time, give you the option to choose an example, and so on.

Thirdly, feel free to divide into parts: learning one large table is more difficult than many small tablets.

In addition

  • It would be a good idea to hang a table above the baby’s bed, as well as in his playroom: even without studying, he will automatically glide over it with his eyes, thereby gradually remembering the numbers;
  • Train all the skills of the child more often: instead of multiplying seven by eight, invite the child to name numbers that, when multiplied by each other, will give 56;
  • If your child is already in school, ask the teacher about her teaching methods. Might be worth using similar method to learn the material faster;
  • Be patient: it is easier for a child to learn the material when he is not limited in time, at least at first.

Very often, parents of elementary school students are faced with the problem of how to learn the multiplication table. For some mothers, such a question is perplexing: “What does it mean to learn? You just have to sit down and learn." But remember how much difficulty school cramming gave you in your time. It is tedious and boring, in addition, the child may not have developed enough mechanical memory, and memorization in this case will not bear any fruit. We bring to the attention of parents and their children ways to easily and effectively master the art of multiplication.

How to quickly learn the multiplication table (quick way)

The first day.
How to proceed? Experienced parents, for starters, are advised to write a table on a landscape sheet - do not print it from a computer, but write it! Preferably as brightly as possible, with felt-tip pens or gel pens. Let your first grader at this moment be next to you, actively participate in the creative process - he can, for example, make a beautiful frame for the table. Talk more with your child, encourage him: “You will definitely succeed, you are so smart with me! Now you are quite an adult, so you must learn the multiplication table!”

On this table, you can use special markers to mark those examples for which the child already knows the answers. Then the material will be absorbed more easily.
Now on a separate piece of paper you can write examples of multiplication by 1 - at first without answers. Start solving examples - and your student will very quickly pick up and write the rest of the answers on his own.
Cross out with a marker notable examples rejoice together that there is not much left to learn.
Now we can remember that 2*1=1*2=2. And write the opposite column.
2*1=2
3*1=3 etc.
Cross out these examples in the large table.

Then you can immediately go to examples of multiplying by 10. Explain to your child that it is as easy as 1, you just need to add a zero to the number. Fix the result. Ask around the child.
The next step is the multiplication table by 2. Children who do not have problems with addition usually also easily cope with this task. Multiplying a number by 2 means adding the same number to the number. You can work out with the help of sweets: “You have 1 friend - there are two of you. How many candies do you need so that you can give two to a friend and keep two for yourself.

What if there are three of you? Four?"
Now let's move on to more complex examples. Multiplication by 9. To do this, you need to multiply the number by 10 and subtract the same number from it.
2*9=2*10 – 2=18
3*9=3*10-3=27
And so on.

Having fixed the result, you can proceed to multiplying by 4. This means multiplying the number by 2 and multiplying the result by 2 again.
Be sure to properly distribute the load. No matter how capable your baby is, it is impossible to learn the entire table in one day. But for a week it is quite real.
So, the first day of math is enough.

Second day .
Begin the lesson by reviewing what you have learned. Be sure to praise your son or daughter, “be surprised” by his (her) success.

Now it's time to work on the number 5. Pay attention to the child that the result always ends with 5 or 0. If the number is even, then the answer ends with 0, if odd, then with 5. Write a column of examples.
5*1=5
5*2=10
5*3=15
5*4=20
5*5=25
5*6=30
5*7=35
5*8=40
5*9=45
5*10=50
Starting with the example 5 * 2, in place of the first digit in the answer, we put two 1, 2, 3, 4 each.
And we also fix everything, bring it to automatism.

Day three .
It's time to deal with multiplication by 3 and 6.
You can try using candies, as with multiplying by 2. Just do not let your pet crunch caramels non-stop instead of learning.
Difficult? Prepare cards: on one side is an example, on the other is the answer. The child takes the card, if he answers correctly, he keeps it for himself. If incorrect, you take the card. In the form of a game, learning something is much easier. Similarly, you can gradually overcome multiplication by 6, 7 and 8.

A special case.
It may seem to someone that learning the table itself is much easier than learning a poem. Consult with your child.

Another non-standard method is designed for children who have a poorly developed mechanical memory, but there are no problems with imaginative thinking. In school, such children tend to be the best at writing essays, drawing well, or having a good ear for music. To begin with, let the child dream up enough and imagine what he associates with the numbers from 1 to 9. Use felt-tip pens, pencils, paints - let him sketch his associations. For example, 0 can resemble a wheel, 1 - Pinocchio, 2 - a swan, 3 - a heart. The main thing is that these images are invented by the child himself. Next, you need to consolidate these associations, for this randomly show your student the pictures he has drawn. Then, together with your child, write a story for each example of multiplication.
In particular, 2*3=6. One girl came up with a story: “One day a swan (2) was walking, met a heart (3) and fell in love with it. He began to take care of the heart. The clown (6) saw this and began to tease them: “Tili-tili-dough, bride and groom.” Kids with a rich imagination remember such stories quickly enough.
The main thing to remember is that even if your son (or daughter) remembers the multiplication table a little slower than his classmates, this does not mean at all that he is deprived of intelligence. Just education system does not take into account the characteristics of the child. Traditional cramming is not for him, school assignments need to be approached more creatively.

Let your child know that you are always on his side, and you will become a true friend for your student, and the learning process itself will turn into exciting game. Good luck!

How to multiply numbers by a column (mathematics video)

To practice and learn quickly, you can also try to multiply numbers by a column.

You have probably heard the opinion more than once that the level of mathematical education is falling.

When my children were in the second grade, I clearly understood Why is the level of mathematical education at school falling? It is in the second grade, when laying the foundation for mathematical education, that such a gigantic irreplaceable hole appears.

The main problem is in the multiplication table. Look at the checkered notebooks that your schoolchildren have.

I went shopping for a long time in search of notebooks. And anyway, here is a picture for everyone:

There are even worse notebooks (for high school students), where there are no multiplication tables, but there are a bunch of meaningless formulas.

So what's wrong with this notebook? The unsuspecting parent sees that the multiplication table is on the notebook. It seems that all my life there was a multiplication table on notebooks. What's wrong?

And the problem is just that the multiplication table is NOT on the notebook.

The multiplication table, my dear readers, is this:

In another way, it is called the "table of Pythagoras."

The top and left columns can be omitted, only the main rectangle.

First, it's a table. Secondly, she is interesting!

Not a single child will consider the examples written out in columns.

Not a single child will be able to find interesting chips and patterns in the written examples.

And in general, when a teacher says: “Learn the multiplication table,” and the child doesn’t even see the table in front of him, he immediately understands that mathematics is such a science where ordinary things are named differently and you need to cram a lot, but understand nothing is impossible.

What is the "table" better?

  • Firstly, it does not contain garbage and informational noise in the form of the left side of the examples.
  • Secondly, you can think about it. It's not even written anywhere that this multiplication is just a table.
  • Thirdly, if she is constantly at hand and the child constantly stumbles upon her, he willy-nilly begins to memorize these numbers. In particular, he will never answer the question “seven eight” with “55”, because the number 55 is not and never was in the table at all!

Only children with abnormal memory can memorize columns of examples. In the "table" you need to remember much less.

In addition, the child automatically looks for patterns. And he finds them himself. Such patterns are found even by children who do not yet know how to multiply.

For example: numbers that are symmetrical about the diagonal are equal.

The human brain is just set to look for symmetry, and if it finds and notices, it is very happy. And what does it mean? This means that the product does not change from the permutation of the places of the factors.

You see, the child notices it himself! And what a person invented himself, he will remember forever, in contrast to what he memorized or was told.

From childhood, the familiar song “2x2 = 4” makes adults smile. Immediately remembered school years and the multiplication table, which was given to many with great difficulty. Now nothing has changed and the children also have to learn the table. There are many methods for learning the multiplication table, some even promise to learn the tablet in a few minutes.

How to learn the multiplication table in 5 minutes - a competent approach

Where do we start studying the table? From the basics and first you have to explain to the child how to multiply a number by a number. That is, before you start cramming the table, you need to understand the principle of multiplication.

We explain to the child that a simple example 2 multiplied by 3 means that the number 2 must be added 3 times. And we show an example that is understandable to him, we write it down like this: 2+2+2=6. Explaining the essence of multiplication. If it is difficult for a child to understand why this example is written as 2x3 = 6, then we take counting sticks, seeds, sweets, cherries, etc. and with the help of these objects we show an example of multiplication.

If the child has learned this, then you can proceed to the next stage, in fact, studying the table.

Which multiplication table is easier to learn?

Teachers of the old school argue that the table, which is now presented on the back of the notebook in the form of columns, is not suitable for a first acquaintance. You can just learn it, but not understand how to use it. And the real table, which opens up all the possibilities of multiplication, is the Pythagorean table. She was placed on each notebook in Soviet years. This table was used by our mothers and grandmothers.

The numbers in the tablet are arranged symmetrically and the child, without even thinking, will look for symmetry and quickly find the right answer.

And yet, if the child saw and understood the principle of how to use the hint sign, then he will need to learn only half of the table. Because the rest is a repetition of the learned material. And yet, the columns and examples of a regular table are sometimes distracting and the student can get confused why extra information is needed. He can learn the table in order, but using the learned material randomly is not an easy task.

How to learn the multiplication table in 5 minutes

The table for 2 and 10 is easy to learn even in 5 minutes! Here it is important to show the child so that he understands the principle of multiplication, and then simple mathematics. For example, to multiply a number by 10, you need to add it the same number of times, that is, 10 times. And so on. And to get an answer, you just need to add 0 to the received number and say the received answer. Children who have completed the first grade already perfectly count within 100 and will be able to convert one to tens.

How easy is it to learn a table for 2? You can do it in literally 5 minutes. The child already knows how to add the same numbers, you just need to explain the principle to him and work out the learned material.

Learned the sign for 2? Feel free to move on to the number 4, and put the table for 3 aside for later. A child will remember a table for 4 faster if he is explained that this is the same tablet as for 2, only all answers need to be doubled. If 2x2=4, then 2x4=8, and so on. Multiplied by 2, got the answer, then the result was multiplied again by 2.

Multiplication by 3 is sometimes harder than the whole table, so a simple counter will help:

How to learn the multiplication table. easy way

The multiplication table for 5 is just as easy to learn as for 2 and 10. Simple answers, counting within 5. A little hint: if you multiply even by odd, the answer is always odd by 0. For example, 5 times 2 will be 10, by 4 will be 20, 6 will be 30. And vice versa, if an even number is multiplied by 5, we get a number ending in this digit in the answer: 5 by 3 \u003d 15, etc.

After the table at 5, immediately jump to the study of the tablet at 9. And learning the table is easy with your fingers. When you master this number, all the rest will be easy to come by: a table for 6.7 and 8. You just need to explain to the child that he already knows the answers to these examples, only they are written the other way around. If 2 times 8 is 16, then 8 times 2 is also 16.

Now you know how to quickly learn the multiplication table, and we advise you not to rush, not to force the child to do what he does not want, to have fun always and everywhere, even on vacation and transport, turning lessons into a game. Good luck!
