(July 8, 2016) Memorial Day of Saints Peter and Fevronia in the Russian Orthodox Church is celebrated on July 8.

Saints Peter and Fevronia of Murom are revered by the people as patrons of the family hearth, guardians of marital love. According to legend, the future prince of Murom, Peter, fell ill with leprosy, from which he could not find a cure anywhere. Once he had a dream that the peasant woman Fevronia from the Ryazan land could help him. When the girl was found, she demanded that Peter marry her as a payment for treatment. He made a promise to do this, but, having got rid of the disease, he did not keep his word. The disease resumed, and only after Fevronia cured Peter again, he finally fulfilled the promise - and never regretted it.

Peter inherited the reign after his brother, but the Murom boyars did not want to see a former peasant woman as their ruler and ordered the young prince to either abandon his wife or leave the city. Then Peter and Fevronia sailed from Murom along the Oka. Trouble began in the city: people demanded the return of the princely couple to the throne. The desire of the people was fulfilled.

The couple lived together happily ever after, and in their old age they took monastic vows and began to pray to God to die on the same day. And so it happened. Peter and Fevronia bequeathed to bury them in the same coffin, but their request was not fulfilled, considering it obscene for people of a monastic rank. But, despite the fact that the bodies of the husband and wife were laid in different monasteries, the next day they were together.

The church canonized Peter and Fevronia in 1541. Since then, in Russia it has been customary to pray to this pair of saints for well-being in the family and ask them for blessings for the wedding. To some extent, the holiday of Peter and Fevronia can be considered an alternative to the Catholic St. Valentine's Day - with the only difference being that in Russia this date was not dedicated to all lovers, but only to those who were married.

Some signs of this day were also associated with marriage. For example, it was believed that if a merchant on Peter and Fevronia worked all day in a shop side by side with his wife, this would bring prosperity to his family.

Other signs, more mundane, concerned the weather and haymaking, which began just at that time. People noticed: if pigs and mice start eating hay, the mowing will be thin; this was also evidenced by the abundance of porridge in the meadows. The seedlings were also observed: if it drinks water well, the days of haymaking will be dry, but if it does not take in water, it will be wet.

Forty more hot days awaited from Peter and Fevronia. “After Ivan, there is no need for a zhupan,” the peasants said about this (Ivan Kupala Day is celebrated the day before).

Fevronia was sometimes commemorated separately from Peter, calling the Mermaid. There was a belief that from this day mermaids begin to dance. Therefore, when bathing, one had to be careful so that the river maiden would not be dragged to the bottom.

Day of Peter and Fevronia in 2016

Memorial Day of Saints Peter and Fevronia of Murom is celebrated by the Orthodox Church twice a year - on the Sunday preceding September 19, in honor of the transfer of relics and on July 8, on the day of their righteous death.

Showing us an example of an ideal married life, Christian love and devotion, Saints Peter and Fevronia are considered the patrons of the Orthodox family and marriage. The day of their memory coincides with a national holiday - the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity.

The Lord brought this couple together in an amazing way. The brother of the prince of Murom, Peter, fell ill with a serious illness, went in search of a doctor to the Ryazan lands. There he met Fevronia. The girl agreed to heal the prince on the condition that he would become her husband. After his recovery, Peter kept his promise and took Fevronia as his wife.

During their earthly life, the holy couple showed incredible devotion to each other. All the joys and hardships they used to share in half. Even when the Murom boyars rebelled against the princess from the peasant class and demanded that the prince renounce the throne, Peter did not leave Fevronia and left the city with her. Soon after their departure, strife and confusion began, the people themselves asked the prince to return and take the place of the legitimate ruler.

Before their death, according to pious custom, the couple took monastic vows with the names David and Euphrosyne. Saints Peter and Fevronia died on the same day. They bequeathed to put them in one coffin, which they had prepared for themselves long ago. To this day, the relics of Murom wonderworkers rest in a common shrine.

The Tale of Peter and Fevronia

"The Tale of Peter and Fevronia" is a monument of ancient Russian literature, which tells about the life of the holy noble princes Peter and Fevronia of Murom. The author of the story is famous writer mid-16th century priest Yermolai (monastic Erasmus).

After Peter and Fevronia were canonized at the Moscow Church Council of 1547, Yermolai was instructed to write the life of the new Murom wonderworkers. As a source, the author relied on oral folk traditions, which strengthened the skaz element in the "Tale" and made it completely different from the works of hagiographic literature of that time.
The plot of the story has become one of the most popular in Russia. The text of the work was distributed in a huge number of lists. More than 300 of them have survived to this day.

The content of "The Tale of Peter and Fevronia"

In the city of Murom, Prince Pavel ruled, and he had a brother, Peter. The devil began to appear to Paul's wife in the form of a serpent to tempt her into fornication. To strangers the snake was seen in the form of Paul, and only the princess knew who he really was. Unable to bear it, she told her husband everything. Prince Pavel asked his wife to extort from the snake, from which he would die. The answer was: "My death from Peter's shoulder, from Agrikov's sword."

Wanting to help his brother, Peter began to look for Agrikov's sword. Once, during a prayer in the Church of the Exaltation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord, a youth appeared to him and pointed to a crack in the altar wall. In it lay the treasured weapon.

That same evening, Peter, after talking with his brother, went to the princess's chambers. Imagine his surprise when he found Prince Paul with her. Quickly realizing that this is the crafty serpent, Peter began to fight with him. The serpent died, but the blood from his wound splashed the prince from head to toe, his whole body was covered with painful ulcers and scabs.

No one could heal Peter. In search of a doctor, he ordered to be taken to the Ryazan land, where he met the daughter of a tree climber (who extracts wild honey) - Fevronia. She was a very wise girl, blessed with the gift of insight and healing. Fevronia agreed to heal Peter only if he became her husband. Peter promised to marry her, but in his heart he was embarrassed that this girl was a commoner, and decided not to keep his promise. Soon the disease resumed and the prince again came to Fevronia. She cured Peter, and he took her as his wife.

After the death of his brother Pavel, Peter began to rule in Murom. But the arrogant boyars did not want to accept his wife, who was not of princely origin, and demanded that the spouses leave the city. Peter and Fevronia accepted their exile with humility and set sail in two boats along the Oka.
Shortly thereafter, a bloody struggle for the princely throne began in Murom. This sowed discord and confusion in the city. Then the boyars, no longer embarrassed by the peasant origin of Fevronia, were forced to ask the prince and his wife to return and continue their reign.

Having reached old age, according to the pious custom, Peter and Fevronia accepted monasticism with the names David and Euphrosyne. Being separated by monastery walls, they asked God for a one-time death. The couple bequeathed to put them in one coffin, which they had long prepared for themselves.

The Lord sent them what they asked for in their prayers - the noble princes died on the same day, at the same hour.

Considering it obscene to bury a monk and a nun in the same coffin, the spouses were buried separately from each other. However, the next day, their bodies miraculously ended up next to each other. Then it became clear that there was a special blessing from God for this, and no one dared to separate them again.

What date is the day of Peter and Fevronia in 2016 celebrated and what is its history? That date is July 8th. And it doesn't change from year to year. The Day of Peter and Fevronia will be celebrated as a holiday of the Russian people, returning to us from our distant past.

No matter how long humanity exists, we will always be attracted by romantic stories like the tale of Cinderella and the handsome prince. Such stories touch any heart, perhaps it is precisely such examples from the life of our ancestors that are called upon to revive the sacred traditions of the Russian people.

July 8 - the day of Peter and Fevronia, a married couple, canonized in the 16th century Russian Orthodox Church whose story is as incredible as it is romantic.
Peter - from the family of the Murom prince, in Fevronia - a simple Ryazan peasant woman, endowed with the miraculous gift of healing people. Their meeting was fateful, but their relationship before marriage was not easy: Peter, healed by Fevronia from leprosy, did not keep his word when they met and did not marry his healer. But fate still brought these people together so as not to separate them ever again: they became husband and wife and fell in love with each other with eternal love.

Fate did not spare Peter and Fevronia even in marriage: the Murom people did not immediately fall in love with Fevronia, not wanting to recognize her as a suitable companion of a representative of a noble family. But love works wonders: having lived in harmony and love for many years, these spouses have become favorites of the townspeople. Their married life is an excellent example for today's young and elderly families to jointly overcome difficulties, support and respect each other in marriage.

Both later received monastic vows. July 8, 2016 is the day of their death (and Peter and Fevronia died on the same day) and will once again be celebrated by the Russian people as a holiday of family well-being.

2008 was a special year for this holiday. Since July 8 of this year, the day of the death of locally revered saints has become an All-Russian holiday. The first to propose to celebrate this holiday not only in the church, but also in secular institutions were the descendants of Peter and Fevronia. The proposal of the residents of Murom was supported by members of the Federation Council: since 2008, the day of Peter and Fevronia has been celebrated by both Orthodox believers and all Russians who cherish our customs.

On July 8, 2016, when the day of Peter and Fevronia is celebrated in 2016, the country will celebrate family day, many newlyweds will seal their feelings with marriage, festive events aimed at supporting the family - this is the only true and worthy connection of a man and a woman for birth and upbringing children will be held in different cities and villages. Happy will be those who marry on this day. And although this holiday has been celebrated by the people from time immemorial, a great idea to make it popular and widely celebrated throughout the country should help strengthen the institution of marriage, create and strengthen family ties of Russians.
