Among the applicants there were many young men and women - students and high school students. So, a whole course of students from the Surikov Art Institute with their teacher Chegodaev joined the division. The division also included three battalions formed in the Moscow region: Krasnogorsk, Dmitrovsky and Kurovsky. An entire class of graduates who graduated from high school in June 1941, together with his teachers S.A. Khazin, I.O. Filatov, K.M. Kilinsky. The first commander of the division was Colonel Petr Kirillovich Zhivalev, a participant in the war with Finland, holder of the Order of the Red Banner.
On July 7 and 8, units and divisions of the division were transferred to the barracks. The composition of the division was as follows: 1st, 2nd, 3rd rifle regiments, 18th reserve rifle regiment, separate artillery battalion, separate scooter reconnaissance company, sapper company, ors, medical battalion, autotractor company. On July 10, 1941, the division entered the Krasnogorsk region of the Moscow Region, and on July 20 - to the Volokolamsk region. While in the Volokolamsk forests, the personnel of the units took the military oath. On July 30, the division is included in the 32nd Army. On August 6, the redeployment of the division to the Vyazma region began, where it was assigned positions to the southwest, a few kilometers from the city. Day and night they dug trenches, built dugouts, engaged in combat training and training personnel.
Since September 1, the division had the 1306th, 1308th, 1310th rifle regiments, the 978th artillery regiment, the 702nd separate anti-aircraft artillery division, the 477th reconnaissance company, the 461st engineer battalion, 866 1st separate communications battalion, 500th medical battalion, 344th infantry regiment, 312th autotractor company, 927th PPS, 394th PKG. On September 20, 1941, the division consisted of: 10668 military personnel, 8621 enlisted men, 164 trucks, 2429 horses, 6345 carbines, 1366 automatic rifles, 129 heavy machine guns, 164 light machine guns, 160; guns: 76-mm guns - 28, 37-mm anti-aircraft guns - 14, 122-mm howitzers - 8, 82-mm mortars - 18, 50-mm - 81 and radio stations - 14. On September 30, 1941, by order of the people's commissar defense division was enrolled in the personnel troops and became known as the 18th Infantry Division.
At the end of September, the division was ordered to redeploy to the upper reaches of the Dnieper. The transfer of the division from near Kirov began on September 30 railway. The division was unloading at the Novodugino and Sychevka stations. On the morning of October 3, the division began to occupy its assigned line in the bend of the Dnieper - in the area of the villages of Volochek, Kamenets, Obledy. The defense zone was 25 kilometers in the second echelon of the front. At 2100, the headquarters of the Reserve Front reported to Headquarters that two regiments of the 18th division had reached the highway, 1.5 km from the Dnieper, and the artillery regiment was unloading in Sychevka. However, the division did not have time to take up positions. Even on the march, at 2100, she was attacked by the Germans and suffered heavy losses. Its 1310th rifle regiment, attacked by tanks, retreated in disorder towards Vyazma. The rest of the division began to withdraw along with other parts of the Reserve Front. The command managed to collect scattered and bloodless parts and divisions of the division, and in accordance with the order received, it advanced in the direction of Gzhatsk. For several days they went literally in parallel with the enemy: he was on the highway, the division was on forest roads. On October 7, at night in the forest, not far from the Tumanovo station, which is a few kilometers from Gzhatsk, the division's scouts met with a column. It turned out that the administration and headquarters of the 16th Army, led by K.K., were leaving the encirclement. Rokossovsky. He gave the order to subordinate the 18th division to his group.
On October 11-12, the 18th division completed its exit from the encirclement. When approaching Mozhaisk, the division received an order from the commander to concentrate in the Zvenigorod area. On October 14, she arrived in the specified area. After that, she became part of the newly formed 16th Army of Rokossovsky and was withdrawn to the army reserve. The German 10th Panzer Division captured the settlements of Agafidovo, Kozlovo and Skirmanovo. Skirmanovo was located on the western slopes of the height dominating the entire district with a mark of 260.4. From it, even in bad weather, forests, settlements, roads are clearly visible for tens of kilometers. The Hitlerite command, having appreciated the significance of this height, turned Skirmanovo and especially height 260.4 into a heavily fortified point. The Germans hung from the south over the Volokolamsk - Istra - Moscow highway and shot through it with artillery fire. The 18th division received the task, together with the 316th rifle division of General Panfilov and the 78th rifle division of Colonel Beloborodov, to capture Skirmanov. During all last days October and early November, the 18th division tried to capture Skirmanovo, but all its attempts were unsuccessful. The unsuccessful outcome of the battles showed that the soldiers of the division still lacked the military ability to knock out the enemy from fortified positions. Therefore, it was decided to thoroughly prepare, carefully plan everything and strike. The commander of the 16th Army, Rokossovsky, decided: the 18th division with the 50th cavalry division of General Pliev and the 1st Guards Tank Brigade of Colonel Katukov, with the support of the 523rd cannon, 289th, 863rd, 694th anti-tank regiments and three divisions guards mortars strike at the enemy's defense not in the forehead, but around and take possession locality. On November 12, after strong artillery preparation, the division went on the attack and, after fierce, bloody battles, captured Skirmanov on November 13. While the Red Army fought defensive battles, our losses, at least, did not exceed the German ones. So the 28th tank brigade destroyed 24 enemy tanks in defensive battles. But Skirmanovo came at a high price. And it's only for two days. On the 16th he had to be abandoned - the Germans launched a new offensive against Moscow.
