Description

2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the Revolution - an event that changed the course of history and turned the lives of tens of millions of people upside down. The fate of the Russian emigration, including that part of it that consisted of members of the noble families of the Russian aristocracy and representatives of the creative intelligentsia, has occupied and continues to occupy the minds of researchers and historians around the world for many years. However, no one was able to collect material about the life of these people in exile, equal in importance and scale to what the famous fashion historian, TV presenter and writer Alexander Vasilyev managed to find and preserve. entitled "Beauty in Exile" made a splash and marked the birth of a serious interest in the topic of "white emigration" and its influence on the world of fashion and art in the first half of the twentieth century. Almost 20 years have passed since then. The book was republished in various formats 17 times only in Russian, not counting publications in English, Lithuanian, Latvian and other languages - which, undoubtedly, is a colossal success for the author. However, Alexander Vasiliev did not stop there, and continued his research all these years and the search for new materials, photographs, artifacts and stories, which allowed us to make a new project - a book worthy of continuing the work begun many years ago by the publication of the first "Beauty in Exile". New materials, including previously unpublished photographs, have accumulated so much that it turned out to be impossible to fit the book in one volume - this is how the idea was born to present the readers with a jubilee edition called "Beauty in Exile. One Hundred Years Later" in two volumes, the publication of which is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution. Along with the materials of the first "Beauty in Exile" the publication includes new chapters and a huge number of new photographs and illustrations collected by Alexander Vasiliev around the world over the past 20 years." The interest I nurtured in the topic of fashion of the Russian emigration does not subside even now. What evidence is this new luxurious edition with color illustrations, supplemented with new chapters. Over the past 20 years, my collection has been significantly replenished with new acquisitions: dresses by Russian émigré designers, fashionable drawings, rare photographs, paintings. It was they that formed the basis of the new edition. I managed to get acquainted with the archive of the house "Iteb", kept by the second daughter of the founder, purchase several dresses from the houses "Iteb", "Paul Kare", "Ardans", "Anna Sergeeva", "Irfe" , models "Kitmir", "Valentina", "Irene Golitsyna", "Oleg Cassini" and other fashion houses created by Russian emigrants. Also in the collection of the "Alexander Vasiliev Foundation" created by me, there are now a sufficient number of costumes for the Russian Seasons of Sergei Diaghilev, made according to the sketches of Lev Bakst, Natalia Goncharova, Mikhail Larionov, costumes of the emigrant duet Smirnova-Tripolitov, costumes of the Artsibusheva ballet troupe, theater wardrobe of Larissa Andersen, wardrobe singer Lyudmila Lopato, the wardrobe of the fashion model Teya Bobrikova, the wardrobe of the fashion model and secretary of Admiral Kolchak Lyudmila Lebedeva-Vasilyeva, the dresses of the Shanghai designer Lidia Vinokurova, the photo archive of Sergei Lifar and Erte and many other rare documents on the history of Russian emigration and fashion of that time. I dedicate this book to one one of the most significant events of the twentieth century, which marked the change of milestones in fashion, style and life of the heroes of my book - the Revolution of 1917 turned 100 years old. Fashion historian and TV presenter Alexander Vasiliev

This is my first book from the fashion historian Alexander Vasiliev, which was presented to me by colleagues at work about DR (we could say what you need and buy). It became the first in my collection of various fashion books. This album is being reissued all the time - it has gone through 12 reissues, just think about it! - and this despite the fact that the very first edition of the publishing house categorically refused to publish as "unpromising" - that is, they were sure that it would not be sold at all. My edition was already 3rd.

Now, if you type the name and author in a search engine with the specification "buy" - a bunch of book sites will fall out, and almost everywhere in front of this position it will be written "out of stock". I don’t know who actively buys these books or the small circulation is to blame, but it’s not very easy to buy it. How much does it cost now, so I don’t know, I didn’t find it. True, in extreme cases there is a mini-edition of the same album, it is easier to buy it.

The book “swells” all the time (the author adds new articles during reprints) and, accordingly, becomes more expensive all the time. The author claims that the photographs used for the illustration are "priceless", so in general the situation is such that it (the album) is presented as an absolute exclusive. Sections are dedicated to both persons (famous beauties different periods), and individual fashion houses, as well as sections about fashion designers.

I was most impressed by the section about Valentina Sanina, a very characteristic fashion designer who could dictate her own tastes to famous clients, in particular, she was friends with Greta Garbo and many even confused them, she was so beautiful:

The book, or rather, a gorgeously illustrated album, can be viewed for a long time from beginning to end and back. And re-read too - it's interesting. There are no such faces, outfits, photographs for a long time and it is unlikely that modern girls will undertake to copy the looks shown in the album. Nevertheless, my opinion: it is somewhat museum-like, does not fit into the profile of today with its high pace and is only suitable for thoughtful leisurely reading of a person passionate about fashion history. Which are few. Such people will read with pleasure about kokoshniks and their influence on wedding fashion Paris in the early 1920s

Here is a piece about kokoshniks as about ... items of pseudo-Russian fashion:

Perhaps that is why I have never had enough time to hang over its pages for a long time - I have to perceive it as an art object, and not as an interesting book from my hobby. It is inconvenient to read it (holding, in particular, is still a brick for a couple of kilograms), the format is inconvenient - some kind of guest room, or something, you need to pin it somewhere (on a music stand?) or disassemble most of the table in order to lay it down so that it was convenient to read (the font is very small in places) and enjoy the photos.

But in general, it, that is, its content, is great! I recommend everyone to look into it through the Internet and find something for yourself. And for readers of the review, welcome to look at the photo from the album.

There is nothing more subjective, fleeting, changeable than beauty. What yesterday was met with delight, today causes only a smile. The faces of recent idols are forgotten - they were replaced by new ones. Nature betrays those whom she generously endowed: old age knows no mercy for them. And fashion knows no constancy. But there are exceptions to these cruel rules.

For many years, theater designer and fashion historian Alexander Vasiliev searched archives and museums, European and overseas. Only here you can now see the once fashionable fabrics with names that no one remembers anymore, dresses that once shone beautiful women of the world, unique beadwork and satin stitch, elegant accessories whose purpose has been forgotten. Many of these items are over 70 years old. But, as the researcher convinces us, - oh, a miracle! - their beauty is preserved. The threads have not decayed, the colors have not faded, the lace is just as thin, the pleating lines are just as impeccable...

Alexander Vasiliev met with those who once made these things and knew how to wear them, to whom they fit like a crystal slipper to Cinderella. However, the women with whom he had the good fortune to see and talk were not Cinderellas at all. And they were real princesses, countesses, baronesses, noblewomen from the best families of Russia.

They were considered the most refined and elegant women of their time. And together with many, many, they were forced to leave Russia after the October Revolution or shortly before. But, finding themselves in Paris, some in Berlin, some in New York, some in Constantinople, they did not get lost and did not bend under the burdens
emigrant life. Not considering the work to be humiliating, until recently unthinkable for their position in society, they raised it to themselves. They gave their taste, aristocracy, artistic talent to the service of fashion. Many of them, no less eminent, were waiting for the career of great fashion models, or "dummies", as it was customary to say at that time. The spiritual beauty of their faces, captured in photographs, is striking even today.

The fate of these women is extraordinary, dramatic. Their life in exile is carefully restored by the author, collected bit by bit - from letters and memoirs of children and grandchildren, testimonies of contemporaries. But the main thing - from the stories of the heroines of the book. After all, many of them lived to a ripe old age.

Documents, testimonies, photographs that Alexander Vasilyev managed to collect convey the spirit and flavor of the time, the special atmosphere of the emigrant environment. Therefore, the publisher considered it important to preserve the style of the conversations he recorded and the magazine and newspaper publications cited in the book.

We hope that with the publication of this book, beauty, which has been in exile for so long, will return to Russia.
