Story

In 1882, a concession agreement was concluded between the Riga City Council and the Consul General of Switzerland in Russia, engineer Eugene Dupont. The contract provided for the construction of the first lines of the city horse-drawn carriage (capacity - up to 40 passengers). On August 23, 1882, 3 lines were opened in Riga. "A" - along the Theater Boulevard-Aleksandrovskaya to Revelskaya Street. Line "B" also started from Theater Boulevard, continued on Karlovskaya Street past Daugavmalsky Market to the bridge. The third line "C" started from the embankment and ran along Moskovskaya Street and ended at Dvinskaya. In 1885, the tram business was transformed into JSC Riga Horse Railway.

After the formation of independent Latvia, the tram industry was run by Belgian entrepreneurs who thought more about making a profit than about investing in development. Meanwhile, the state of the infrastructure deteriorated. In 1931, the tram industry was again taken over by the city. Gradually, the condition of rail tracks improved, and the volume of passenger traffic increased.

Until 1975, passengers in trolleybuses and trams were served by conductors. Later, tickets could be purchased in semi-automatic machines, and in 1997 conductors returned to trams and trolleybuses. At the beginning of the 21st century, the Tram and Trolleybus Department was merged into a single enterprise with the motor depot of the Riga City Council and two bus depots. In 2007 the tram conductors were replaced by composters. In May 2009, the punchers were replaced with electronic ticket readers containing electronic data. The new program is called "E-talons" - "E-talon" and includes both tickets with a travel limit, as well as registered or non-registered tickets valid from 2 to 13 years.

Technical features of the Riga tram

Among one and a half hundred cities of the USSR with tram traffic, Riga and Daugavpils were an exception: not pantographs or yokes were used as current collectors, but a rod. The advantage of the rod: it is lighter than the yoke and, moreover, the pantograph. But, on the other hand, it is more difficult to operate the bar to a certain extent: simultaneously with the turnout switch on the rails (another feature: in Riga in the past few years, turnouts with not one, but two “feathers” have appeared), it is also necessary to ensure the switching of the “arrow” to contact wire.

The advantage of the bar on a trolley bus is the ability for the car to deviate up to 5 m from the wire - for a tram it is not very important, but the probability of a rod breaking off the wire, unlike a pantograph, is very high. Nevertheless, the costs associated with the transition to another current collection, and, more importantly, the need to simultaneously decommission not one, but several routes at once during the rewiring of the network, serving thousands of passenger flows - all this for many decades prevented the necessary restructuring. However, in other cities of the USSR, on the contrary, they experimented in the 1950s with the transfer of trams from yokes (which dominated until the end of the 50s) to rods, and due to the lack of convincing arguments in favor of the pantograph, Riga continued to operate trams with rods. The third Latvian city with a tram - Liepaja - switched from rods to pantographs in 1961, because of which tram traffic was suspended for one day.

It is interesting that the carriages of the Riga tram were evacuated during the First World War to Petrograd and were used on the Oranela suburban road.

Low floor wagons

Since 2009, Rīgassatiksme has been replenishing its rolling stock with new wagons with a lower floor level. T3A and T6V5, Czech-made coaches manufactured by the Tatra company, are still in operation in Riga. The commissioning of the new type Škoda 15T low-floor wagons, also manufactured in the Czech Republic, is being carried out gradually. The first such cars began to run on June 1, 2010 along the route with the largest passenger traffic - No. 6 “Ul. Ausekla - Jugla". By February 2011, 20 three-section Skoda 15T trams and 6 four-section Skoda 15T1 trams arrived in Riga. In February 2013, low-floor trams began to run on route No. 11 "Station Square - Mezhaparks". From June 5, 2017, low-floor trams also run to Imanta.

The expected commissioning of new cars with a lower floor level on other routes:

  • 5: Ilguciems - Milgravis, tentatively 2022.
  • 7: st. Ausekla - Dole shopping center (3 and 9), tentatively 2026.
  • 2: Central Market - st. Tapeshu, approximately 2029.
  • 10: Central Market - Bišumuiža, approximately 2032.

The new cars did not require a significant reconstruction of the track and turnouts, however, due to the fact that they are equipped with a pantograph type semi-pantograph (previously only a bar was used in Riga), a complete reconstruction of the contact network was required. The new design of the contact network is compatible with current collectors of both types.

The horse tram in the city appeared in 1882, one of the first in the Russian Empire.
The electrification of the horse-drawn tram and, accordingly, the appearance of the tram dates back to 1901.

The length of tram lines is about 90 km (33rd place in the world):

The elimination of tram lines in Riga during the Soviet era had a relatively small scale; the lines were more often not closed, but moved to parallel streets. Despite this, the tram was forced out of the main transport corridors. However, the tram network, nevertheless, is present in all the main areas of the city (except for the east and the extreme south-west).

Passenger traffic - about 100 thousand people a day:

The tram is no longer the main city transport, lagging slightly behind the trolleybus in terms of traffic volume and significantly behind the trolleybus. However, in most of the main transport corridors, it is the tram that is the main mode of transport (since the tram is the main transport around the main transport hub of Riga, near the old town, railway station, bus station and central market).

The basis of the rolling stock is Tatra T3A cars:

Also in considerable quantity there are Tatra T6V5 cars:

A feature of all the Riga Tatras is their use of a rod instead of a pantograph.
But the most important thing is the presence in Riga of modern European Skoda 15T cars:

On Skoda, unlike the Tatras, semi-pantographs are used.

Riga is the first and so far the only city in the former USSR where a significant amount of traffic is carried out by modern European rolling stock.
In general, the Riga tram system is one of the most modern and developed in the post-Soviet space, which is reflected not only in the new rolling stock, but also in the condition of the tracks, and in the place of the tram in urban transport policy. There are plans for the development of the tram network, which may well be implemented with current trends.
Something like this.

R I J S K I Y T R A M V A Y What connects Odessa with Riga?.. Question? "The man spent the night with the lady, and in the morning he said: - Like a real gentleman after what happened, I must marry you! She answered: - I agree, I agree, but wus tistes, wus tistes ?! If you want translate "vus tistes" into Russian, it would be close to "what happened?" "In the good old days...and bad times, many people in Odessa spoke Yiddish. And not necessarily Jews. In Odessa, Yiddish was to some extent an international language, and no one was shy, not even the Jews. Why be ashamed - language is language. Everyone says like that. Yiddish was widely used by people of different nationalities, regardless of the fifth column ... - this is how a native Odessan speaks about Odessa and talks about life in Odessa - ... It was the language of communication. If you don't know the language, why talk to you?! Yiddish was known even by inveterate hooligans. And at the same time with "fenya". And the women could quite calmly talk in Yiddish, walking along different sides of the street, in the middle of which the tram ran. And no one cared before. Aicin steam locomotive! Think women talk. Well, even if it's a little loud, that you can't hear the tram behind them (Riga!). Well, so what?! Well, what’s the “such” here?!” I don’t know Odessa Yiddish, but for fairness I’ll say: “Where there are Jews, Yiddish lives there.” And there are Jews in Riga. I will tell you that ... No one in Riga will argue for the sparkling and temperamental "Odessa" humor recognized by the world community. For "Riga" ... Arkady Raikin and Mikhail Zadornov have already said before me. Of course, there is a difference The mild Baltic climate encourages work on thought with such precision that... "the mosquito does not undermine the nose." That's right. And what kind of Riga? Not all of them, of course, but he did say that they had been talking about him in Odessa for many years... What honor does we have! Moreover, we are unlikely to be able to get to the bottom of the true, deep reason why Odessa acquired exactly the "Riga" tram model? Yes, that's it... now... Wait... Here! We know for certain that the "Riga" model is the only one in the Soviet Union, in which the frontal emblem disappeared in 1972, and its place was taken by the Latin letters RVR - Riga Carriage Works, in Latvian Rigas vagonu rupnica. Love for Latin? I do not know. Maybe. History says that the Riga Carriage Works was founded in 1885 by the German-Baltic businessman Oskar Freivert as a joint-stock company "Feniks", and was the first and largest wagon manufacturer in the Russian Empire. And the first tram in general and the immediate predecessor of the electric tram, in particular, was the "konka" - the city railway, the cars of which were driven by draft animals. Most often horses. If there were mules, they would be brought by mules. Where are those mules? In America?! So that's far away. - 2 - We know that the working day of the horse was limited by the physical capabilities of the animal. Four or five hours. And what do you say? - We don't like animals and don't worry about their lives?.. In the UK, on the Isle of Man, the horse racing still functions. My first acquaintance with an electric tram was in Liepaja, the city of my childhood. Nowhere else, I have not seen such an "eternally crying horse" that lives starving, but is exploited day and night, without rest, which was represented by the "Liepaja" tram. Another acquaintance, but with the "Riga" tram, happened on my arrival in Riga to my relatives by my mother... The night train from Liepaja arrived in Riga at about six in the morning. We walked down the street a block from the railway station to the tram stop on Krishjan Baron Street. The attraction of this street was its cleaning. The janitors washed the sidewalks and their section of the street with a hose with water. It was amazing for a child's mind. During the years of Soviet power, the following inscription was on the signs of houses: "Kr. Baron Street", later I heard that students cheerfully call it: "Red Baron Street". Probably because red was the main color during this period of the city's development. Of course, the "Riga" tram - "loaf" still rumbled and squealed piercingly when turning, passing through the streets of Riga, but it seemed to me even very fast, as far as it can be attributed to a tram, compared to the "Liepaja" slug. The tram rushed along the freshly washed streets in the morning, creating high spirits in me. It is clear that the sealing of the cars did not contribute to sincere conversations, but the noise made it possible not to be distracted from the movement of life in Riga taking place on the street. You could see street pedestrians, shop windows and shop signs. In those good old days in a tram one could hear such a dialogue of passengers, stimulating vitality. And remembering the inhabitants of Odessa, who say: "Live, once you have taken it! ", let's listen to him: - Adam! I have everything! - Yes ?! And what do you have?" Adam answered with eyebrows raised in surprise. - Everything! .. What you need. - And what is needed, that is. - Is there something? - What is, is what is needed. - What is needed? - What is, is what is needed. low-floor, noiseless trams with good sealing and a high level of comfort. There is a retro tram. But in the summer. One can disagree with me that tram rides were conducive not only to communicating in Yiddish, but also to mutual understanding and intercultural dialogue. I won’t even to insist that the "Riga" tram was a haven for free-thinking personalities, but was and remains a banal public transport of individual citizens of a particular country ... - 3 - A Negro is sitting in a tram and reading a newspaper in Hebrew. This is noticed by a Jew sitting next to him and says: - "Isn't it enough for you that you're a Negro? Anecdotes have no master, just like humor has no boundaries. But there is a saying that everything is ekdots were invented in Odessa. And if this is so, then this anecdote really happened in Odessa, but ... in the "Riga" tram. There were no others in Odessa. Then. And what about the well-known desire of the Odessans for independence?.. It is found in their jokes, and we read: "... Interestingly, Yiddish in Odessa was more widespread than the Ukrainian language, although, according to rumors, Odessa is located in Ukraine. However, , Odessa is clearly not a Ukrainian city. This is not Kyiv, not Lviv, not Zhmerynka and not Kryzhopol! Odessa is Odessa. And tell me, what does Ukraine have to do with it ?!" But there is a connection. A Ukrainian and a Jew are on the train. The Ukrainian pulled out a fragrant shmat of lard, dumplings, blood sausage, sits, gobbles up. The Jew took out a piece of stuffed fish - he eats and says: "The food of the gods, and it is extremely useful, here both potassium and phosphorus feed every cell of the brain." The neighbor could not stand it, offered to change. He chews stuffed fish and is perplexed: there is no particular taste, it smells doubtful ... He says: "Something seems to me, I made an unequal exchange." Jew: "You see, the gray cells have already begun to work!" And meanwhile, the intercultural dialogue continues: Khokhol removes a gun from the wall, going somewhere. "Where have you gone, Petro, gone?" the wife asks. - That pida, troch moskalik shrill ... - Well, how about you? - What about me? I will note. One intercultural dialogue opens the next one and the next one... and sometimes "demolishing state borders", striving for universal intercultural communication: Question to the Armenian radio: - Is it true that women of easy virtue have eyes shining at night? Reply of the Odessa radio: - If this were true, then there would be white nights in Odessa ... Reply of the Riga radio: - Excuse me?! .. Reply of the St. The dialogue continues and if you look at the world with living eyes, you never get tired of being surprised at everything that happens in it. In 1912, an electric tram ran from Riga to the Kemeri station in Jurmala, a satellite town of Riga. Now electric trains of the same Riga Carriage Works that produced the famous "Riga" tram go there. Riga and Jurmala coast with unique white sand beaches are not far from Odessa. There is also Riga black balm, Riga sprats and Riga black bread, Riga velvet beer. And there is, That... what you are thinking now. Leheim!

How to use an e-ticket? The first thing you need is to buy an e-ticket and add trips to it. When boarding any type of public transport, it is necessary to register an e-ticket (via an electronic composter)

An e-ticket must be registered for all passengers, including those who use a monthly ticket or travel by public transport at a free fare. A green light on the reader will tell you that the trip has been registered, while a red one indicates that the registration has failed and the passenger needs to purchase a single trip ticket from the driver.

Paper ticket for 1 trip

A paper ticket for 1 trip purchased from the driver costs 2 Euro. Sold in public transport and on night routes. Valid for the duration of a trip on one route on one transport where it was purchased.

Yellow e-ticket

Yellow e-ticket is a card with a chip made of cardboard. You can buy a temporary ticket, a group ticket or a ticket for a certain number of trips. This type of pass can be purchased at the following sales points: ticket offices, Narvesen, Preses apvienība kiosks, Latvijas Pasts Riga branches, Rīgas satiksme ticket sales points.

The e-ticket is designed to register the trip of one passenger. If a multi-person ticket is required, then a group ticket for two or three passengers must be purchased.

Blue e-ticket

There are two types of this type of plastic coupon. The only difference of this type of card is that only 1 person can use a personalized ticket. This card is made with a photo, and the address of the owner is indicated on it. In case of loss, this card can be blocked and restored.

Personalized e-ticket - issued free of charge, in case of loss or replacement, a fee of 2.85 Euros will be charged.

Non-personalized e-ticket - made without a photo, a deposit of 2.85 Euro is required for issuance, which can be returned upon returning the card. Can be used by multiple people at the same time.

Where to buy tickets for travel in Riga

  • Ticket machines. I wouldn’t really count on them, there are very few of them in the city - about 30 pieces, and they are located in very non-trivial places.
  • Riga public transport customer service centers.
  • Ticket sales points: ELVI, supermarkets Narvesen, Rimi, Latvijas Balzams. During a trip to Riga, I noticed that there are very few ticket sales points, most of them are located in non-obvious places, and the opening hours are not indicated.
  • Replenishment of electronic travel cards is possible via the Internet.
  • Tickets for 1 trip can be purchased from the driver as mentioned earlier, but the price will be higher.

Ticketless ticket

Checking tickets in public transport is carried out by controllers. The fine for traveling without a ticket is 20 Euro if paid on the spot and goes up to 50 Euro if paid after some time. So always buy and validate the right type of ticket.

Public transport website

Riga City Public Transport has its own up-to-date Rigassatiksme website, as Latvia keeps pace with the times. On the site you can get all the information about the passenger transportation of the city, about the time of movement of all types of transport, the fare. The main convenient feature of the site is laying a route from anywhere in the city to the place you need. The mobile version of the site is not very convenient, it is better to use the desktop version.

Tram in Riga

Tram is a very popular type of public transport in Riga. There is no metro in the city, and trams are very comfortable to move around. The history of Riga trams began in 1882 with horse-drawn trams, then the network was electrified, and the number of routes grew every decade. In Soviet times, the main tram was Tatra T3, which is so familiar to us.

Currently, these trams are not very efficient to use and are gradually being replaced by modern, low-floor and quieter Czech-made Škoda 15T trams.

Now the route tram network of Riga consists of 9 routes and 1 retro route, which employs 267 rolling stock.

Tram timetable: all year round, seven days a week, approximately from 5 am to 11 pm. Tram intervals: from 10 minutes on weekdays to 30 minutes on weekends in the evening.

Riga trolleybuses

Trolleybus communication is quite well developed in Riga. A total of 354 trolleybuses run on 19 routes. Most routes pass through a key stop - the Railway Station, and trolleybuses also connect the city center with remote areas of Riga.

The trolleybus fleet mainly consists of modern low-floor Škoda Solaris Trollino trolleybuses.

At each trolleybus stop you will find the schedule and route of the trolleybuses passing through that stop. Some routes, it seemed to me, are very illogical, and tourists should be careful and watch where this or that trolleybus is heading.

Trolleybuses run seven days a week, and, depending on the route number and time of day, you can focus on the following schedule: from 5 am to 11 pm. Traffic intervals: from 5 minutes during peak hours to 30 minutes at weekends and in the evening.

Buses in Riga

Buses in Riga are the main passenger carrier in the city. There are 476 buses on 53 bus routes, the length of the routes is 883 km. Bus routes cross the entire city and connect Riga with the suburbs, by the way, a bus is the only way to get from Riga Airport to the center.

Modern clean Solaris, Mercedes-Benz Citaro, Mercedes-Benz O345 buses operate on bus routes today, which have replaced the old smelly backward Ikarus.

Each public transport stop in Riga, including bus stops, is equipped with a route schedule, a map and a pointer with route numbers.

Buses run seven days a week, depending on the route number and time of day, you can focus on the following schedule: from 5 am to 11 pm. Bus intervals: from 10 minutes during peak hours to 1 hour at weekends on unpopular routes.

Minibuses

As in Russian cities, in Riga one of the types of public transport is fixed-route taxis or minibuses. In total, 21 minibus routes operate in the city. Minibuses run according to the schedule on the established route. The intervals of movement and the operating time of minibuses are almost the same as for buses. There are two fixed-route taxis that travel from the center to Riga Airport. The fare is the same as for other types of public transport.

Night routes

Nightlife lovers, as well as guests of the city who arrived in Riga at night and settled not in the center, will be happy to know that night bus routes operate in Riga. There are few night routes, only 9, and they do not cover the entire city. The night bus schedule is approximately as follows: 1 time per hour from 24:00 to 5:00. A ticket purchased in advance is 1.15 Euros, when purchased from the driver - 2.00 Euros.

Riga railway transport

In addition to the standard urban transport of Riga, the city has developed rail links. Both intercity and international trains and commuter trains come to Riga.

The main railway station in Riga is called Riga-Passenger (Rīgas Pasažieru stacija). Station address: Stacijas laukums 2, Centra districts, Riga. And it is here that trains from Moscow, St. Petersburg and Minsk arrive. The main railway station has everything you need for travelers: a supermarket, lockers in the form of cells, a pharmacy, all kinds of shops, cafes, a Lido self-service restaurant, a train departure and arrival board. The central station itself is small and consists of 5 platforms and 12 tracks. In total there are 19 railway stations in Riga.

The schedule of trains and electric trains can be viewed on the official website of the Latvian Railways Pv.lv.

By the way, about trains. You can get to by train. The trip from Riga to the resort takes about 40 minutes. It is worth considering that there are several railway stations in Jurmala, but there is no Jurmala station. The most popular stations are Lielupe, Bulduri, Dzintari, Maiori (Majori is the city center) and Dubulti. The ticket price to Jurmala is 1.40 Euro. Trains run approximately every 30 minutes, but when planning a route, it is better to look at the train schedule in advance.

Riga Central Bus Station

The main bus station in Riga is the Riga International Bus Station (Rīgas Starptautiskā Autoosta) by the address Prāgas iela 1, Latgales priekšpilsēta, Rīga, Latvia. The bus station is located near the central railway station - about 300 meters from it. Most of the international buses from Europe and Russia of the following companies arrive at this bus station: Ecolines, Simple Express, Lux Express. The bus station is simple and easy to navigate and find the right bus platform.

Taxi in Riga refers to public transport, which means that certain fares apply for travel, a taxi has the right to drive in dedicated bus lanes and park in specially designated areas.

The fare for a taxi is approved by the state, and cannot exceed the following amounts: landing 2.13 Euro; 1 km of travel 0.71 Euro; 1 minute of waiting or idle time in a traffic jam 0.14 Euro.

Thus, the fare does not depend on whether you called a taxi by phone, took a taxi in the parking lot, or caught a taxi on the street, the fare should not be higher than the established norms.

While traveling by taxi in Riga, I noticed that a lot of old dirty cars drive in the city, and especially arrogant and old taxis are clustered near the railway station and bus station, as well as near the historical center. Many drivers do not follow the rules of the road, and sometimes I was really scared when drivers were driving through a red light or overtaking on an oncoming lane. During my stay in Riga, I liked two taxi companies:

  • BalticTaxi: Baltika Taxi has polite staff, clean cars. The maximum landing fee is 2.13 Euro; the cost of 1 km is 0.64-0.71 Euro; downtime rate 0.13-0.14 Euro per 1 minute. Taxi phone number: (+371) 20008500
  • Panda Taxi: the cheapest taxi I've seen in Riga. The service is normal, the drivers are adequate, the cars are served quickly. The maximum landing fee is 0.71 Euro; the cost of 1 km is 0.36 Euro; downtime rate 0.13 Euro per 1 minute. Panda Taxi Phone: (+371) 67 000 000

Lovers of comfort, for example, when traveling to the airport or to another city, can advance in a Russian company. And you will arrive at the hotel, airport, Jurmala or other destination exactly at the appointed time.
